A Cobblestone Away: the riders who came close to greatness at Paris-Roubaix

March 25 th 2026 - 14:54

They came within touching distance of victory in the Hell of the North. As Paris-Roubaix Femmes Hauts-de-France approaches, a new series looks back at those who came just short of lifting the cobblestone trophy.

At Paris-Roubaix, victory can come down to the smallest detail. A mistimed attack, a sprint gone wrong, or bad luck at the worst possible moment. While some riders write their names into legend, others—just as great—remain forever one cobblestone away.

This is the focus of the new series “A Cobblestone Away”, produced by Paris-Roubaix Hauts-de-France. Through six interviews published until April 12, major figures of the sport revisit their unique relationship with the Hell of the North, sharing performances, emotions and defining memories.

The first episode features Adrie van der Poel. Winner of the Tour of Flanders and Liège-Bastogne-Liège, the Dutchman chased victory at Paris-Roubaix throughout his career without ever claiming it. His podium in 1986, behind Sean Kelly, remains one of his most memorable moments: “Behind Kelly, I was still happy.”

The series will also highlight leading women who have made their mark on Paris-Roubaix Femmes Hauts-de-France. From Marianne Vos to Lorena Wiebes, their stories will offer a unique insight into what makes this race so special—and so difficult to win.

With the 2026 edition just around the corner, these stories serve as a reminder: on the cobbles of northern France, every detail can change the outcome.
